As I reflect on National Library Week, I think about how I appreciate the library. I am lucky enough to have a career that I love and where I can continue to learn on both sides of the desk. As a kid, my brothers and I would go to the Fairbury Public Library.

The children’s librarian was a nice but no-nonsense lady. She knew all the great books; just don’t bring them back late or damaged! I knew then that’s what I wanted to be. (Except the no-nonsense part!)

One of my favorite books was Tell Me Why by Arkady Leokum. I received it sometime in the ’70s and haven’t stopped asking why since. This is really how I knew I was destined to become a Librarian. I enjoy finding and researching information. Though I am now older and maybe wiser, I’m no less no-nonsense!

As Mayor Wirth read the proclamation for National Library Week, I was thinking that is everything libraries and the library staff is: we are the heart of the city and community, we are accessible and inclusive places where you can belong, we extend far beyond the brick and mortar of the building where everyone is welcome to use the resources, we provide access to computers and WIFI for all, a makerspace to create your most innovative ideas, and we have programs that encourage lifelong learning and cultural programs and exhibits for enjoyment.

I didn’t want to mention COVID, but it did bring many new positive ways for libraries to continue our service, and, to prove we are innovative and willing to serve our communities. We did storytimes and book discussions via Zoom. We continued to research questions, offer curbside service, and because of technology, the opportunity to explore reading, music, and movies from your tablet or phone with just the use of your library card. Electronic resources may have been around for a while, but quarantine and closings gave people the opportunity to use their convivence.

People have often told me with technology and Google there will not be a reason to have a library. We will never be replaced because we are the place where you are free to learn the why’s and how’s of all information. Libraries will always be trusted and treasured places to gather for the exchange of thoughts and ideas. I want everyone to know that I truly am happy to be here at your service. (And that is no-nonsense!)
